The goal of a balanced diet is to provide our body with all the important nutrients. The right ratio between the different foods is crucial for this. Ideally, three quarters are vegetable: Fruits and vegetables generally have few calories, but they provide numerous vitamins and minerals. The animal content should be smaller, but still available in order to cover the need for protein and fat. Carbohydrates can also be included.
The BZfE advises more variety on the plate. That means, for example, not only planning bananas or apples, but the whole colorful and diverse range of fruits and vegetables. In addition, the selection should be sustainable in order to protect the environment and ultimately the health of us humans.
The motto is “regional and seasonal”: Food that comes from the farmers in the region and does not have to be imported protect the climate and often taste better.
The food pyramid helps you to get an overview of the amounts of food. Drinks form the basis. Plant-based foods follow in second and third place, i.e. vegetables and fruits as well as grain (products), which are often and abundantly on the menu. Animal foods - milk, dairy products as well as fish, meat, sausage products and eggs - are placed in fourth place. These foods are best served regularly, but in moderation. Economy is the order of the day when it comes to oils and fats in level five. The main thing here is quality. In the top of the pyramid there are sweets, snacks and nibbles. They are intended for economical enjoyment. Each component stands for one serving .
A big advantage of the food pyramid: It is versatile. The simple structure makes it suitable for children and young people as well as adults. Because the measure for a portion can be your own hand. The portions grow with you and the food pyramid takes into account that the nutritional requirements change with age: small children, small hands - large "children", large hands.
